Monday is Labor Day.  To most Americans, it’s the last hoorah of the summer, a three day weekend!  Few know what Labor Day is all about.  It is more than another weekend for another special "SALE". At yet it does have lots to do with the American worker and what can be more American than celebrating the American worker. Many came to our country to gain opportunity which we commonly call the pursuit of happiness. When I think of Labor Day I think of the quintessential workers: Rosie the Riveter, those who built the Model T and those who constructed the Statue of Liberty and the Hoover Dam.

Americans have great creativity and ingenuity, from hands-on tinkering in the garage to design drawings and blueprints. Countries throughout the world have been in awe of our U.S. economy and the success our workers enjoy. Generations of American workers have put in long hours in order to provide a better life for their children.

Labor Day, however, is not just a celebration of the worker but also of their unionization that led to safer workplaces and fairer wages. While most agree with the valuable contribution of the labor union, today many consider unions less beneficial, less necessary, certainly the safety of the employee should be a priority of our businesses every day. And wages and benefits, especially healthcare, I suppose will continue to be debated forever.

Interestingly, as professional insurance agents we too are committed to safe workplaces.  We work with employers to protect their employees with Workers' Compensation insurance.  Workplace accidents, like any accidents, cannot be eliminated but they can be minimized by inspections that insurance professionals offer to businesses.  And should an accident occur, workers compensation not only pays for the medical needs but also provides employees compensation so they can continue to pay their bills.

Yes, we have made great strides in the care and provisions, the safety, wages and benefits! Today we celebrate these strides so American workers can enjoy the fruit of their hard work. Let's do all we can to educate, to train and to create jobs.  Then every Labor Day we will have a reason to celebrate the true strength of our American economy, the American worker!
