Our clocks "fall back" this week, adjusting for Daylight Savings Time, but what about our bodies? What can you do to ease the effect of this sudden change to your daily life?

With the time change scheduled for 2 a.m. on Sunday morning when most of us will be asleep, we will begin adjusting on Sunday but for most of us our body clocks won't be on schedule for about two days. As we gain an hour our stomachs will be speaking around 10:30 Sunday morning that it is time to eat. Sunday night and Monday morning we will struggle without sleep and energy.

Here are some suggestions to help you ease into the change:

  • Get up earlier on Saturday morning and go to bed earlier that Saturday night. By Monday morning you will be more refreshed. Don't take a nap on Saturday. If you are tired, try taking a walk to re-energize yourself.
  • On Saturday and the first few days Daylight Savings Time, avoid spicy foods, naps, alcoholic and caffeinated beverages all of which can affect our sleep as you make the adjustment.
  • Eat smaller meals more often for a couple of days. Avoid heavier meals that affect your sleep. By Tuesday, try to eat by the clock and not by the daylight on your typical schedule.
  • Spend time outside during the daylight. Natural sunlight exposure also helps with your mood as you make the adjustment.
  • Get moderate exercise. Serotonin is released when you workout and this helps your body want to go to sleep.
  • If you are a parent, adjust bedtime back for your children by 15 minutes a night starting a couple days ahead of the change.

I will miss the quality quiet time of the dark and peaceful mornings. But starting Monday, I am going to take advantage of the morning light and begin my early walks.

Spring forward, Fall back.
